At some point, we’ve all dreamt about a more rustic life. The fantasy of moving to a log cabin in the woods, a cottage in the mountains, or an airstream on the open plains is pretty much universal. This year’s latest interior design trend, rustic modern, seizes on these visions and elevates them, bringing a luxe touch to the Americana aesthetic. It’s so chic even Posh Spice herself approves.
Victoria Beckham took to TikTok to share a makeup routine, revealing her and David Beckham’s rustic modern bedroom in the background. The beautiful space is full of natural light and natural wood, juxtaposed with a crisp white duvet and mid-century modern sculptural lamps.
The modern rustic home trend has significant benefits for mood and design. Greg Roth, senior interior designer at CarbonShack, a sustainable architecture and design firm states: ‘The rustic modern trend is exemplified by a tendency towards biophilic imagery, details, and references in design. The move to lend a rustic sensibility to our interiors comes out of a heightened appreciation of the preciousness of the earth’s natural resources, as we are constantly exposed to nature’s fragility and power.’
Greg Roth has more than 20 years of experience in the worlds of architectural, graphic and interior design. After earning a Master of Architecture degree from the Southern California Institute of Architecture, Greg spent several years in commercial and hospitality architectural design before segueing to residential interiors.
In David and Victoria Beckham’s space, the liberal use of wood ceilings and walls works hard to create a stunning look. Greg comments, ‘There is nothing quite like the inherent warmth and richness that natural wood brings to our interiors. He continues, ‘A contemporary or modern style, when accented with rustic wood elements, provides a unique piece of elegance and simplicity.’
Speaking of rustic mixed with modern, the white sheets and bedding in the Beckhams’ room create a crisp contrast approved by bedding experts. Carlin van Noppen, head of interior design and owner at Fig Linens and Home, tells H&G: ‘I love the use of white in this space. While all-white bedding in a room with white walls can look a bit clinical, it provides a welcome contrast in this earthy space for a warm and spa-like feel.’
On the topic of spas, Greg agrees that D and V’s rustic modern theme helps to create a relaxing bedroom. ‘In a bedroom space, where we seek to recharge, reconnect, and relax, rustic design elements can go a long way towards setting the scene,’ says Greg. ‘When we are connected to the natural world and the earth, there’s an almost automatic grounding that happens.’
